Trauma

Trauma is a person’s response to a distressing or life-threatening situation. Traumatic events are usually sudden and unpredictable. They can greatly impact a person’s mental, physical, and emotional well-being. Trauma can impact a person’s sense of safety and create a sense of fear. When traumatic events are not effectively dealt with or processed, they can have long lasting effects on a person. Sometimes a person may have stress reactions like feeling numb, panic, nightmares, being startled, have sleep problems, or unpredictable reactions to certain things, people, or places. Each individual handles a traumatic situation differently, and its impact can be present even years after an event. Trauma-Informed therapy helps individuals process and come to terms with the unpleasant memories that have long been avoided. Other types of trauma therapy which can be beneficial in the treatment of trauma include Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT). Coming to terms with the events of your past that weigh you down is a very courageous journey. The therapeutic environment of counseling can provide the gateway to healing in order to process unresolved experiences and feelings you hold in a safe and supportive environment.
